10-Digit Dialing

IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT 10 DIGIT DIALING!

In 2005, Mississippi will receive its fourth area code. This area code will bring ten-digit dialing to the 601 area code region. The new area code, 769, will overlay the existing 601 area code region.

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

If you live in the Mississippi 601 area code region here's information to help you get ready for the new 769-overlay area code.

Your area code won't change, but the way you dial in the 601 area code region will.
New area code 769 will bring changes in local and expanded dialing for customers in the 601 area code region of Mississippi. Because new area code 769 will overlay the existing 601 area code region, ten-digit dialing - the appropriate area code (769 or 601) plus the seven-digit telephone number - will be necessary for local and expanded local calls to be completed properly

Ten-digit dialing affects all customers in the 601 area code region. With ten-digit dialing, every time you make a local or expanded local call, even within your area code, you will need to dial all ten digits (the area code plus the seven-digit number). On March 14, 2005, ten-digit dialing will be required to complete all local and expanded local calls. It will not be necessary to dial a "1" or "0" when dialing your local and expanded local calls.

You don't have to change telephone numbers.
Ten-digit dialing is necessary so that calls can be completed in the 601 area code and the new 769-overlay area code. The new 769-overlay area code does not replace the existing 601 area code and will be assigned within the 601 area code region beginning in 2005. Therefore, you will not have to change you present telephone number.

Here's what you should know:

• You should reprogram all stored local telephone numbers to include the area code, including your Internet Connections.
   
• You should reprogram all equipment like fax machines, modems, wireless phone, or any equipment with automatic dialing features.
   
• Customers within the 601 area code should begin dialing ten digits for all local and expanded local calls, so that by March 14, 2005, when ten-digit dialing becomes mandatory, it will be second nature.
